Cambridge Football Club, based in Alra Park and playing out of McKenzieville Stadium, is gearing up for an exciting new season in the Ekurhuleni Hollywood Bets League.

The club has been given the green light to compete after SAFA Ekurhuleni lifted its suspension – a decision that was declared unlawful, with all charges officially withdrawn.

Bridges have started with preparations and are sharpening their skills with friendly games. The league will kick off with its first matches on October 18. In a recent friendly match, Cambridge played against Jealous Down FC.

The match proved to be a perfect preparation for Cambridge FC as the intensity and speed was evident on the field. Jealous Down played with a much younger team and it showed as they constantly pushed Bridges back.

Bridges needed to defend for long periods. Jealous Down scored the first goal and kept Bridges scoreless the first half.

After numerous changes were made at halftime, Bridges were more competitive and scored the equaliser in the 70th minute. A lapse of concentration in the 89th minute allowed Jealous Down to score the winning goal.

“We have a new coach who needs to get to know the players and get to make them understand his philosophy and style of play. We trust he will build a team that will be competitive in the league.

“We are asking local businesses to assist the club with finances for this season as most of our matches will be played in the south and north of Ekurhuleni and travelling fees are a major challenge,” said Ignatius Maphike, Cambridge FC chairperson.

The teams that will be part of the league are FC Legends, Tembisa Destroyers FC, XI Experience FC, Alberton FC, Benoni Northerns FC, Germiston Ashfire FC, Kathorus Juventus Academy, Ambassadors FC, VRRPHA Nations FC, Benoni City United FC, Future of Africa FC, Olympia FC, Samba Boys FC, Joburg City FC, Cambridge FC, Dream Team FC and Goal Getters FC.
