Michael Zulu Primary School wins silver at Ekurhuleni Regional Gymnastics Competition
Despite challenges and limited equipment, Michael Zulu Primary School’s gymnastics team took second place, bringing home silver medals and a trophy.
TSAKANI – Michael Zulu Primary School recently participated in the Ekurhuleni Regional Gymnastics Competition in Kempton Park and finished second.
The school won a trophy, and the learners received silver medals. School gymnastics coach, Mamohale Ngwenya, said it felt incredible to win.
“We felt that our hard work paid off. Having gymnastics recognised at this level puts Michael Zulu on the map, especially since not many schools offer this sport. It proves our competence and excellence,” she said.
Ngwenya added that the achievement would help the school gain greater recognition, attract more admissions and inspire learners who love gymnastics to choose Michael Zulu.
“For our learners, it boosts self-esteem and helps them feel proud of themselves. It means being the best of the best in this sport.”

She explained that preparing for the competition was not easy, as they trained twice a week and learners also practised at home.
“We focused on technique, endurance, breathing, confidence and staying mentally strong. Everyone trained with dedication.
“The team faced several challenges, particularly the lack of proper training apparatus. We had to improvise in certain areas and avoid injuries.
“Learners even used their beds at home as makeshift beams, and mastering certain skills was difficult without the correct equipment,” Ngwenya said.

Despite these challenges, Ngwenya said the learners gained valuable life lessons, such as hard work and discipline.
“Their love for gymnastics motivated them to persevere. Their desire for self-improvement, along with the support of their parents and coach, kept them focused and determined. We embraced our school’s motto, ‘School of Excellence’, as a source of inspiration,” she explained.
“The learners were always striving to be their personal best. Once they mastered a skill, it became more than just a technique. I was a symbol of growth and unity. The team became a bond that held them together.”
Ngwenya said her most memorable moment was seeing her learners flawlessly execute difficult skills they had struggled with during training.
She thanked the parents and the school for their support.
