Grandfather gets life sentence for raping 12-year-old granddaughter
The Ekurhuleni District Commissioner’s office has welcomed the life sentence handed to a 63-year-old man, convicted of raping his 12-year-old granddaughter while caring for her during the pandemic.
The office of the Ekurhuleni District Commissioner has welcomed the recent conviction and life imprisonment of a 63-year-old man found guilty of raping his 12-year-old granddaughter.
Warrant Officer Majang Skalkie stated that the Spring Regional Court ruling delivered on October 16 marked a significant step toward ensuring justice for victims of GBV and sexual abuse.
Skalkie said that the man began raping the victim during the Covid-19 pandemic, when her grandmother was at the doctor’s or collecting her grant. He would stay behind with his granddaughter and assault her.
“The granddaughter confided in her teacher about her ordeal, and a case of rape was registered in August 2024 at the Springs SAPS. He was in custody until his sentencing at the Springs Regional Court,” said the warrant officer.
Skalkie also said that the court’s ruling sends a strong message against such heinous crimes, especially those committed against children.
Ekurhuleni SAPS commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended the work of investigating officer Detective Sergeant Siyabonga Radebe from the Springs Family Violence and Child Protection Unit.
