Duduza dance battle empowers young creatives and crowns top performers

Young dancers showcased their skills, gained exposure and competed for top honours at the Sjaiva Sonke Dance Battle, while organisers called for community support to help nurture future creative stars.

Duduza – Matokollo Ratau, through her organisation, i-Talent Libhaya eKasi, successfully hosted the Sjaiva Sonke Dance Battle on June 6 at Bluegum View in Duduza.

The event brought together talented young dancers from across the community, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills, build confidence, and gain exposure.

Creatives from all walks of life were given an opportunity to entertain and collaborate.

“We believe that dance comes from within, and that every dance genre carries its own unique meaning and expression,” said Matokollo.

The event received support from JNBM Group Private Security, which provided trophies for the Best Female Dancer and Best Male Dancer awards.

“We are delighted to have crowned Shanda Nhlapho as the Best Female Dancer and Njomane Leshapa as the Best Male Dancer.

“Both winners received trophies as well as cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding performances and dedication to the art of dance,” she said

The organisation’s mission is to revive the spirit of dance and the arts within its communities.

“Instead of seeing young people roaming the streets, we want to create safe spaces where they can come together, showcase their talents, and gain the exposure they need to be seen, heard, and appreciated.

“We believe that many young people are destined for greatness as professional dancers, poets, musicians, DJs, actors, actresses, and other creative professionals,” she said.

“By nurturing their talents from a young age, we can help them build brighter futures and pursue their dreams.”

Matokollo highlighted that the initiative would not have been possible without the unwavering support of her mother, Cleopatra Nonhlanhla Ratau, who played a crucial role in organising the event.

“She assisted with the planning, setup, and coordination of activities, helping to ensure that the Sjaiva Sonke Dance Battle was a success.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Keke Tau, a qualified dance graduate, who served as one of our judges.

“His presence inspired many of the young participants by demonstrating that it is possible to pursue dance professionally through education and dedication,” added Matokollo.

She mentioned that she appeals to the public for donations to support her organisation’s work.

“Donations of clothing, sanitary pads, toothpaste, bath soap, and any other essential items will be greatly appreciated.

“We are also seeking sponsors to partner with us as we plan to host this event three times a year.

“In addition, we aim to visit schools with a group of dancers we will be training, giving back to communities through outreach programmes that include the distribution of donated clothing, sanitary products, and other necessities,” she cited.

The next Sjaiva Sonke Dance Battle is scheduled for September 26. The venue will be confirmed through posters distributed throughout the community.

The organisation is currently looking for 15 aspiring dancers between the ages of seven and 15 to join the organisation.

Rehearsals will take place at the Duduza Church Hall during the school holidays after the closure of Term 2. Registration opens on July 1. For more information, contact Matokollo on 084 310 6383.
