Tsakani – Tsakani CPF chairperson Mncedisi Somyo has urged residents to prioritise safety when renovating their homes or travelling away for work or weekend trips.

Somyo warned that houses under renovation often attract criminals because building materials, tools and properties are left vulnerable.

He advised homeowners to hire trustworthy contractors, secure building materials, lock away valuable equipment after working hours and ask neighbours to keep an eye on the property and report any suspicious activity.

“Do not leave your property open or unattended. Ensure gates, doors and windows are secured, even while renovations are taking place,” he said.

Somyo also encouraged residents travelling away from home to avoid posting their whereabouts on social media until they have returned.

He recommended asking a trusted neighbour or family member to check on the property, collect mail, switch lights on and off where possible, and ensure all entry points are properly locked.

“Criminals often target homes that appear unoccupied. Taking simple precautions can go a long way in preventing break-ins,” said Somyo.

He further encouraged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity immediately and continue working with the CPF and SAPS to help combat crime in the community.
