Theo Twala learners to represent Ekurhuleni

KwaThema - Six cricket players from Theo Twala Primary will represent Ekurhuleni in Mini Cricket Tournaments in December.

But school staff say the learners won’t just be representing the region, but their school and KwaThema as a whole.

This comes after the learners recently participated in trials, where they earned the approval of the Eastern Cricket Union selectors.

Teacher and cricket coach Boni Seremo says as a school, they are very excited and proud of these children – as these selections reward their effort and hard work.

“We started mini cricket years ago, through teacher Ruben Mthombeni – who’s since left the school – developing children from as young as 7-years-old.

“That was to introduce the children to the sport for enjoyment purposes.

“But it soon grew to tournament involvement and resulted in us developing a lot of learners, who are now cricket coaches today.

“These include Mandla Nkosi, Maxwell Motsweni, John Vilakazi, Zweli Khumalo and Abraham Xamba among others,” she says.

Seremo adds that they are preparing their u/12 and u/13 cricketers currently – who’ll be competing at the regional phase of Mini Cricket tournaments.

The six selected comprise: Daisy Mbale, Kamogelo Tshabangu, Phiwokuhle Ninzi, Mbhekeni Dube, Koketso Nkonwane and Vusi Tembe.

The youngsters will be representing Easterns in the four day tournaments at Johannesburg, Durban and in North West province.

“What we love about mini cricket is that after Grade Seven, some of these children get bursaries and scholarships.

“They also learn more about the foundation of the sport, have fun and it develops them, while keeping them off the streets,” says another teacher and coach, Strike Mlangeni.

The coaches say they are also proud to be a feeder for the KwaThema Cricket Club and therefore urge other schools, to get involved in the sport for the benefit of their children.

“This keeps the children preoccupied as after school they go home, do homework and then go to the club for cricket practise.

“On weekends they also have matches they play.

“Thank you to our School Management Team and parents for all their support,” say the coaches.
