Drugs worth R10 000 seized as 190 suspects arrested during Ekurhuleni Operation Shanela

Law enforcement agencies arrested 190 suspects across Ekurhuleni during Operation Shanela, with drugs worth more than R10 000 seized in Kwa-Thema.

Kwatsaduza – 190 Suspects were arrested for various offences by members of law enforcement agencies, including SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, Security Companies, and other stakeholders, during operations conducted across Ekurhuleni Policing Precincts on May 15 and 16.

Among others, 134 were nabbed by detectives during their suspect-raiding operations.

“Other suspects were nabbed for crimes such as possession of drugs, dealing in drugs, Contravention of Protection Order, drunk driving and being illegal immigrants.

“In Kwa-Thema, SAPS Crime Prevention members acted on a tip-off regarding drug activity at Mngomezulu Street, on May 16,” explained Ekurhuleni SAPS district spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela.

Sekgobela said officers proceeded to the address and, upon arrival, observed an African male through the back door of the main house, counting money next to a plastic bag containing smaller plastic packets.

She added that when officers entered the house, they found additional wrapped plastic packets containing a substance suspected to be drugs on top of a bed.

“The suspect was then arrested for dealing in drugs and taken to Saps Kwa-Thema for detention. Drugs estimated to be worth R10 050 were seized from the premises,” added Sekgobela.

The Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, thanked all members of law enforcement agencies who participated in the operations for their team spirit, as well as concerned community members for their continuous support in providing accurate information that led to the arrests of the suspects.
