Adoption of SPCA pets during lockdown
You can now visit the Alberton SCPA, under strict regulations, to adopt a pet.
The Alberton SPCA will be facilitating adoptions as of the May 25, but residents need to know that the adoption procedure has been amended accordingly due to the pandemic.
Alberton SPCA’s adoption visits will now only work on an appointment basis.
Visitors who made an appointment will get a 20-minute time slot which will allow them to interact with the pets who are up for adoption. Only one person will be allowed to view and interact with the dog of their choice. Should you have children under the age of 18 only one adult and one child will be permitted.
Due to the lockdown regulations, the SPCA is only allowed to adopt within the Alberton SPCA jurisdiction.
“We sincerely apologise to all the interested families that have contacted us and stay outside of our area, but circumstances beyond our control have dictated this to us. “We must think now what is best for the animals in our care and at this present getting them out is our number one priority,” said Nadia Saunderson, manager at Alberton SCPA.
All adoptions are on a first-come, first-serve basis and no animal will be reserved unless all documentation and a 50 per cent deposit have been received.
If you are looking at adopting a dog, and have existing dogs on the property you will be required to bring them along at your appointment. This is to save time in the adoption process.
If you reside in a complex the SPCA requires a signed letter of permission from the body corporate allowing you to adopt the dog or cat. If you are renting a property (complex unit included), a signed letter from the landlord listed on your lease must be sent permitting you to keep a dog or cat on the property.
“Please remember that even if you already have pets, we still require these letters as every animal brought onto the property must be noted,” she said.
Strict regulations in place
According to Nadia, all visitors must wear a mask at all times. “We will check your temperature upon arrival and we have sanitizer available. At the moment we are also not allowing pregnant women or people suffering from chronic diseases,” she said.
To book an appointment contact their officers and make sure that you have a copy of your proof of residence, ID (matching that of the proof of residence) as well as a copy of the body corporate rules stating you may have a pet, should you reside in a complex, flat or estate to email through to us once the booking has been confirmed.
“Please remember that any discrepancy or incorrect documentation submitted will result in a delay of you getting an appointment in time.”
Adoption hours are Mondays to Thursdays from 9am to 3pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 11am.
