Silwerkroon residents may finally get some relief after many years of constant battles with their lift.
This is after Phumzile Nyatlo, the City of Ekurhuleni’s projects manager, assured Ward 106 councillor Alderman Bruna Haipel that they were working on the matter.
According to Haipel, who had constantly questioned the progress of this project, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. It looks as if the new lifts, which had been promised at least two years ago, may be about to arrive and be installed.
“This follows many years of constant battle with the powers that be at council and many hardships endured by the residents of Silwerkroon due to the lifts being out of commission for weeks at a time,” she said.
She said the saga of the broken lifts at Silwerkroon residence dates back many years ago.
“In November 2018, at a service delivery meeting, even Member of the Mayoral Committee Nketle ordered the officials to see that the new lifts be installed by January 2019. We have been given far too many excuses as to why this did not take place,” said Haipel.
Salome Teixeira, a Silwerkroon resident, said they would highly appreciate to have new lifts after so many years of struggle.
“We would be glad to have anything done to resolve problems faced with our lifts or to receive new ones for that matter. We really need lifts that are in good condition because we also have seniors who are not able to take care of themselves,” she said.

Haipel assured that if all goes according to plan the first batch of lifts should arrive at the end of July.
“We can only hope that this will come to pass and the residents’ warmest wishes could materialise. However, I am on high alert because there may be a sting in the tail,” she said.
In her response, Phumzile Nyatlo, the City of Ekurhuleni’s project manager, said that the matter was to be resolved as contractors were appointed for the residence.
“Generators for Silwerkroon are complete and had been tested on June 26. The lifts are at 40 per cent manufacturing. The first batch for Musan Trading should arrive end of July 2020. We were delayed by the COVID-19 lockdown,” she said.
On another note, Haipel told the RECORD that there was an item in the June council agenda about rental increases.
“This item was referred back due to lack of public participation, which should have taken place before such a proposal could even be discussed, but did not. I promise to keep the residents informed when this does happen,” said Haipel.
