WATCH: Officer caught allegedly taking a bribe in Alberton

The Gauteng Traffic Police is investigating allegations of bribery after one of its officers was allegedly caught in the act.

The said officer was caught on camera allegedly taking a bribe from a motorist on the R59 Freeway next to Alberton on September 28.

The video caught many people’s attention as it surfaced throughout social media platforms.

In the video, the officer is seen perusing through some papers. Soon after a short interaction the motorist is seen going to the back of his car.

The motorist then tactically reaches for his pocket and quickly rushes back inside his car. He is then followed by the Gauteng Traffic Police officer who eventually picks up the alleged bribe.

Gauteng Traffic Police were made aware of the video doing rounds on social media relating to the incident.
Sello Maremane of Gauteng Traffic Police told the RECORD they strongly condemn the act and that certain measures will be taken.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police can confirm the matter is being investigated as we view bribery and corruption unethical and unprofessional. The Gauteng Traffic Police expect its officers to conduct themselves in an ethical manner and with the highest form of integrity,” said Maremane.

He stated such conduct negatively impacts on the public’s confidence in the Gauteng Traffic Police.

“This undermines our efforts towards making Gauteng a safe and secure province for all citizens. Due processes and corrective measures will be followed once the investigation has been concluded. We continue to advocate messages of road safety, rooting out corruption and we will not hesitate to deal decisively with any element that stands in our way to achieve this goal,” he said.
