Children’s Literacy Programme at Wembley Squatter Camp
Among other things children were taught the dangers of playing with dangerous items.
Born To Read, Sanca Central Rand Alcohol and Drug Centre – Rosettenville, and the Department of Sports Arts, Culture and Recreation Region F, recently had fun through literacy with children living at the Wembley Squatter Camp.
Born to Read read stories and gifted the children with educational books, colouring books, crayons and toys.
Sphiwe Ntombela from the Department of Sports energized the children with aerobics and taught the children how to play indigenous games.
As prevention and early intervention service, Sanca Rosettenville’s Ke Moja team kept the children captivated with a puppet show that addressed the dangers of playing with items such as used syringes and cigarette butts.
The purpose of the programme was to encourage children from a young age to participate in healthy recreational activities in avoidance of risky behaviour in order to increase their capacity to make informed and healthy choices about drugs and recreational activities.

Kgomotso Dhlamini, project coordinator from Sanca Rosettenville said, “Considering the positive impact and much-needed implementation of this programme, we look forward to making this a monthly intervention, especially considering that these children are not attending school, instead they are exposed to social ills within their community.
“Should there be anyone that can assist in making a positive difference for these children, please contact any of the committee members.”
