Dustbin used to commit crime

Your bin is a tool for crime

In most areas, you need to place your household wheelie bin out in the street on a particular day to be emptied when the council refuse collection team does its rounds.

However, residents are leaving their bins out overnight and criminals are taking advantage by using the bins as a ladder to climb over perimeter walls.

Alberton resident Amanda Nel has urged residents to not only put their dustbins out on the morning of collection day, but also bring them back in because a dustbin on the pavement shows that there is nobody home.

Criminals used Nel’s bin to climb over her property wall and stole a few items in her home. The theft was recorded on her CCTV camera.

Nel also advised residents to ensure that their bins are stored on their premises at night, even if they arrive home and find that the bins have not been emptied.

By leaving your bin outside overnight, it can be used as a ladder for someone to climb over your perimeter wall. It can also be a hiding place to ambush you or used to transport stolen goods.
