St Martins’ Grade Eights learn more about running a restaurant

The experience was fun yet educational for the learners.

The St Martin’s School Grade Eight Personalised Learning Programme culminated in the students opening their pop-up restaurants to their families and guests.

The students spent two weeks researching the operations required to run a restaurant. Their research included an outing to Norwood where they visited various restaurants to speak to owners and managers of these establishments to understand the business and operational aspects of running a restaurant business.

The students created two pop-up restaurants at school. The Los Santos Italian and Lananas Noire Mexican restaurant teams set to work in groups to run their marketing, kitchen and front-of-house areas in preparation for the judges to rate their pop-up restaurants.

The judges scored each of the operational areas and in the end, the two restaurants were tied in their scoring.

The experience was a fun way of learning beyond the classroom and the food produced was delicious and of excellent quality.
