Horizon High learners win big in Monetary Policy Committee Challenge

Horizon High School in West Turffontein puts the south on the map.

Horizon High School Grade 12 learners are proud of the lessons learnt at the Monetary Policy Committee Challenge.

Melusi Sibanda, Juan Ryan, Wandile Hlatshwayo and Molepa Mahlangu represented their school, out of 102 schools in the country. They came second in the challenge, organised by South Africa Reserve Bank.

Their task was to research and write a 1 000 words essay about the current state of the economy, the understanding of economic relationships and monetary policy. They first submitted their work on May 27 and on July 7 they heard they made it to the second round, where they had to present their work.

The good news came on August 31 when they learned they came second nationwide. They each won R11 000 while the school won R25 000.

Mahlangu, who was a ‘governor’ of the committee, said it was great to have that position. It taught him a lot, the experience was overwhelming.

Sibanda said: “I learned more about inflation and that if it is high, it can cause havoc in the country.”

Ryan learned how interest rates and monetary policy statements work, while Hlatshwayo gained insight into economics, supply and demand and how to prepare and present monetary policy statements.
