Fun-filled birthday of Logie Govender at Metro Ministries Africa Church
Logie was born on October 13, 1933, as the oldest of ten siblings.
Logie Govender celebrated her 89th birthday on October 18 with family and friends at Metro Ministries Africa Church, who lavished her with food and treats.
Logie was born on October 13, 1933, as the oldest of 10 siblings. She had an arranged marriage at the age of 16, as was traditional in Hinduism.
Her marriage did not work out. Her father brought her back into his life and being the eldest daughter he was devastated by what had happened to her. He was saddened because he had forbidden her from marrying the gentleman who truly loved her. Her father died the same year, leaving her with her mother, six brothers and three sisters.
Her mother made fat cakes and stitched clothing for a living. Her younger brother, a very intelligent young man who studied to be a bookkeeper (accountant in today’s terms), bought Logie a sewing machine to help with the upbringing of the younger siblings. That is when her life began.
She began sewing and dressing brides and became known as Zeegi Logie from Germiston. A few years later, her younger accountant brother became ill and died from a brain tumour. She and her mother raised the younger siblings together for many years.
She then met the same gentleman, Rungs Govender, who had wanted to marry her before her first marriage. She later had a daughter named Charmaine.
According to her daughter, Charmaine Naidoo, she was nurtured into the fashion world and studied to become a fashion designer.

“My mother lived her life with me as her only daughter and my two children, Varushka, an attorney and her two sons Kiaan and Kayden, Bianca, a fashion designer (fourth generation) and her Kreo, who runs a timber and board business with me.
“When I lost my husband at the age of 45, my mother was a rock for me and her grandchildren and she is now enjoying four great-grandchildren. She joked that she would be ready to say goodbye after her grandson’s wedding in March 2023.
“She is an amazing Christian woman and the eldest member of Metro Ministries Africa, where she encourages women to be strong and courageous.”
Charmaine also stated that her mother’s doctor, Ajay, cannot believe she is free of chronic illness and believes she will attend her grandson’s wedding and meet his children.
“These are the stories we need to hear to find strength in these trying times,” said Charmaine.
