Police responded to a reported crime scene at a complex in Mondeor on November 8.
According to the victim Rhoda Lehlabi, she woke up at 01:42 to use the restroom. When she went to her front door, she saw the curtains were open and when she looked inside, she discovered that the TV, sound bar and kettle, all of which have a combined value of R35 000, were missing.
“When I checked the door, it was unlocked. The thieves entered through the small window, took the kitchen door keys and opened the front door. They then left the keys on the couch. They also left the DSTV decoder outside, next to the door.
“I live in a complex and we have security guards on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I called the management, who came with the security guards that were on duty. The guards said they saw nothing.
“The complex has experienced three break-ins. The first was into a neighbour’s car. The second one was at an upstairs unit and it is now my unit.
“We anticipated that the management would increase security by installing cameras and alarm systems, but instead, they don’t care that we pay levies and the majority of the residents are dissatisfied with the security measures,” said Lehlabi.
Lehlabi stated the perpetrators did not use the gate next to her apartment because it makes a noise.
“I don’t know which exit they used because we have two gates and the first one is where the guards sit for duty.
“When I called the owner of the security company, he was furious and demanded to know where I got his phone number. After the incident, the first manager arrived and did nothing but listen to my story. He left without saying anything. This morning, another manager from the security company arrived and enquired about what had occurred.
“He said they would investigate and that he would get back to me. I told him that it could have been one of his employees. Another issue is that whenever they bring in a new security guard, we are never introduced to him,” said Lehlabi.
Lehlabi emphasised that she is worried because they broke in while she was sleeping and wonder if they wanted to rape and kill her.
“What is the point of having security in our complex if thieves can enter our properties while we are sleeping and do whatever they want? We are not safe at all,” said Lehlabi.
