De Freitas Foundation receives humanitarian award

The foundation continues to feed over 100 destitute families.

At the Johannesburg Ward 55 Humanitarian Awards, the De Freitas Foundation was presented with a humanitarian award in recognition for the work that it had undertaken during the height of the Covid pandemic.

Manny de Freitas said, “Although I was invited to attend this prestigious awards ceremony, I was unaware that our foundation would be a recipient of an award. I was surprised when I was called to accept it.

“All of the recipients of the various awards were all most worthy as they in various sectors had done wonderful work among the community. “I am deeply humbled and honoured to be among the many other most commendable recipients that have done and continue to do fantastic work within the community,” he said.

He elaborated that despite the foundation being one with minor means, it has been able to feed thousands of underprivileged people during the lockdown period. It continues to feed over 100 destitute families regularly and supports the André Avelino Day Centre for seniors, based at the Luso-Africa Portuguese Club.

Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors and donors, the foundation has since the beginning of the lockdown been able to distribute over a ton of clothing to those in need.

“The foundation will continue to do what it can in assisting those most forgotten and marginalized in our community. “We did not expect to be honoured with this award but my sister, Jeanette, my mother and I are most humbled with the unexpected recognition,” De Freitas said.
