EMPD encourage residents to report livestock on public roads

A fine of R500 or more can be issued for livestock obstructing a public road.

Residents are encouraged to report livestock roaming public roads to the City of Ekurhuleni call centre at 086 054 3000.

EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said a fine of R500 or more can be issued for livestock obstructing a public road.

“Before we issue a fine, the livestock owner is warned about the problems the animals are causing and if the problem persists a fine will be imposed,” she said.

“However, should livestock be causing problems for the community within an appropriate grazing area, the owner will only be advised to hire a shepherd to monitor the animals.

“In instances where livestock is not overseen and taken care of, the city’s environmental health department will be notified.

“If necessary, the department will send officials to speak to the owner about the condition of the livestock and the SPCA will also be asked to assist.”

She added people are allowed to keep livestock in residential areas if the metro has earmarked them as farming zones.
