WATCH: South Rand Hospital celebrates staff’s excellence
The staff was encouraged to brighten the corner where they are.
Dorothy Lesejane was celebrated at the South Rand District Hospital excellent awards on November 23 for serving the public for 40 years.
Having started in 1982, she received a certificate of appreciation in recognition and as a token of appreciation for continuous consistency and satisfactory and devoted services in the public sector.
Lesejane thanked God for all these years at the hospital. “I’ve worked in the different departments, teaching doctors and student nurses from the college. I went through challenges, although I’ve never gone for hearings or nursing counsel. I was careful about my patients and I’ve worked in most departments. I’ve worked with the acting CEO Dr Lucky Letwaba in the paediatric ward several times and I have left a legacy in Ward 2.
“I went for training in different institutions including Baragwanath, Helen Joseph and Johannesburg General. I am happy to see the directors of clinics here who groomed me, including Sr Nomakhosazana Veyi.
“I am a hard worker through her. She used to tell me that with patients you must be careful and don’t retaliate when one of your colleagues has annoyed you and don’t retaliate with patients. I can only thank God for these 40 years. It is not through my wisdom. Thank you so much South Rand Hospital,” she said.
Outstanding workers
Acting CEO Dr Lucky Letwaba said he is proud to be part of this event that celebrates the hard work done throughout the year.
“Today we celebrate outstanding workers and this doesn’t mean others weren’t working.
“To give a little background of the hospital, it was built in 1954 and is part of the City of Johannesburg district. It is gazetted to have 314 beds, although we are currently using 285. We had to cut down in the wards to make way for office space because we don’t have a yard where we can place extra containers.
“Here we follow the vision and mission of the Department of Health. With vision, we look at a responsive, value-based and people-centred healthcare system. The mission includes transforming the healthcare system and improving the quality, safety and coverage of health services provided while focusing on primary healthcare. Also, strengthening public health education and health promotion and ensuring a responsive, innovative and digitally-enabled health system.

“As we are going to the digital world and computers will be a must for all employees, we subscribe to values which are humane, efficiency, accountability, legality, transparency, honesty and integrity, in short Health and I.
“The hospital has achieved most of its targeted goals. We can say we are at 86%, although we wanted 100%, however, we have our shortfalls. We are in a process of changing into a paperless hospital. I’m glad to say on November 2 the admin and support went paperless. There is a clinical module coming for doctors and nurses where they will no longer use paper and pens,” he said.

One of the board members, Nomakhosazana Veyi wished all the staff success and congratulated those who got the awards and those who didn’t to keep trying as they will achieve one day.
The chairperson of the board, Simphiwe Hlafa congratulated Dr Letwaba as a leader. He said the quality of leadership is measured by the happiness of the staff. “I can see people are happy here and maybe we should relook at your designation and remove ‘acting’ and just call you a CEO,” he said.

Other long service staff members from 10, 20 and 30 years were recognised and the best performing staff members were also given awards.
