Suiderdoord South community members embark on a clean-up campaign

The residents were so fed up with crime as a lot of house burglaries and mugging would happen due to overgrown bushes.

As part of their efforts to keep their neighbourhood clean and neat, Suideroord South residents spent the morning of May 6 cleaning the parks and streets.

The residents were fed up with crime and said the overgrown bushes helped criminals to commit crimes such as house burglaries and muggings.

Councillor Stuart Marais also participated in the initiative. TPS Security donated funds and Hyper Paints donated red oxide and paint.

A community member, Cindy Morujao, helps keep the area tidy.

According to one of the community’s leaders, Ardele Fernandes, the community raised money to assist in purchasing cleaning supplies and other essential items.

“Our first project was to erect stolen palisades on Potgieter Street, and since then, we have installed some palisades that we painted blue, oxidised, and sandpapered. Our next project will be to clean up the park, which is also in a terrible state,” said Fernandes.

She said there was a lot of family bonding and the making of new friends.

“We want a neighbourhood where we can feel safe and be confident in our shared community. Our sincere gratitude goes to the residents who helped. We look forward to our future projects.

“We are considering forming a committee and eventually hosting markets in the park. Residents are welcome to attend our monthly Saturday meetings in our neighbourhood. The next meeting will start at 14:30 on May 13,” said Fernandes.
