Kibler Park Secondary School learner Britney flies SA flag high
Britney learnt about the scholarship competition from her modeling coach and mentor, Gladys Nape who is also a national director of the competition.
Britney van Rooyen (16) of Kibler Park Secondary School has qualified to be South Africa’s first junior teen winner to compete in the World Imperial Beauties South Africa 2023.
The Eldorado resident will compete in Florida, United States of America, on July 20 to 23.
Britney learnt about the scholarship competition from her modelling coach and mentor, Gladys Nape, who is also a national director of the competition. She entered the competition and was crowned nationally as a queen in her category, age 13 to 19, on April 5 at Soweto Theatre in Johannesburg. She will now compete internationally.
The competition, which focuses on community development, is open to people aged four to 50 and they have to showcase their talents and leadership skills through modelling. If a woman is crowned queen, she will receive a $3000 scholarship, as well as other benefits and be eligible for other titles.
The organisation focuses on academic achievement and community service involvement. Delegates promote the international platform HOPE- Helping Our People Everywhere, throughout the world.
“I am honoured to be chosen because only a very select group of young women can participate in this prestigious event, and I am one of them. There were junior categories of three to 12, 13 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 40, and 50 plus.
“Each category had three winners – first princess, second princess, and a queen.
“I am originally from Johannesburg South but moved to Eldorado Park to live with my grandparents, and while there, I realised that this is not the lifestyle I want my children to live in, or rather, the lifestyle I want to continue living in. So I thought I should enter the competition because it will give me a chance to change how people perceive the place and the people living there.
“I believe in equality, and that everyone should be treated equally regardless of race, culture, gender, religion, or background.
“This competition provides you with a platform to raise awareness of such issues, and during the competition, I was asked what I would do if I win the title. I told them I would raise awareness, stand for equality, and help the disadvantaged.”
A stepping stone
This accomplishment is huge for Britney because it means she will be representing her country in something she is passionate about. Britney has been modelling since she was three years old and was pretty much hooked on modelling from that point on.
“My first competition was a small fundraiser at my creche for Valentine’s Day when I was three years old. I discovered that I enjoy and love this, and this was a stepping stone without knowing I would get this far.
“Being where I am today took a lot of effort, and it was a bumpy ride, to say the least. I believe my passion grew when I won my first modelling competition when I was in fourth grade, and I’ve never looked back since.”
Grateful for the opportunity
“I’d like to thank God, as well as my modelling coach and mentor. I wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t taken me in when I was in fourth grade. She saw potential in me. Thank you also to my mother, who has remained supportive and strong for us despite adversity, and my family, who have been my staunchest supporters.”
When asked for advice for aspiring models, Britney said, ”If you want to be a model, go for it, but don’t go for it to be someone else. Modelling is all about being yourself, being authentic, and bringing something new to the table.
Enter the industry to effect change. Do not give up, persevere in the face of adversity, and remember that our timing differs.”
Sponsorship request
Britney recently received her passport and visa. She needs a guardian with her because she is a minor and cannot travel alone.
She is seeking sponsorship of R54 000, which will cover food, lodging, transportation, and clothing, to go with her mother and compete at the international contest. Contact Britney’s mother on 061 243 8320 or at reneevrooyen@gmail.com
