More than 690 people arrested in Gauteng for various crimes

SAPS continues to free the streets of Gauteng from crime as they fight illegal dealings by conducting weekend operations.

During high-density operations over the weekend, police in Gauteng confiscated counterfeit products worth R30m and detained over 690 wanted individuals.

Teams of law enforcement agencies under the supervision of the provincial commissioner for Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, continued the pursuit of wanted suspects in Gauteng and operations to combat crime in Johannesburg.

The SAPS provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said the operations primarily targeted persons sought for violent and criminal offences such as murder, rape, robbery, hijackings, possession of unregistered guns, and drug trafficking.

They detained 219 individuals in the Johannesburg district and 210 in the Tshwane district.

Over 270 offenders on the run after committing violent and major crimes were apprehended by detectives in the Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, and West Rand districts.

“Some arrests included over 300 suspects driving while under the influence of alcohol across the province over the weekend, and over 350 undocumented persons were nabbed and later processed by Department of Home Affairs officials,” Masondo said.

The suspects will appear in due course at various magistrate courts.
