WATCH: State of Mayberry Park sidewalks and recreational facility concerns resident
The property opposite the park also has overgrown weeds, which residents fear may harbour criminals intent on mugging people.
The recreational park on Yellowwood Street in Mayberry Park is in an untidy state. The Alberton Record visited the site and found uncut grass, weeds, litter and rubbish, enough for everyone to see.
A concerned resident who regularly visits the park with his daughter alerted this publication to its untidy state. Opposite the park are more uncut weeds outside a property on the curve, with one street drain clearly blocked by weeds. Two other drains appear to have been recently cleared of weeds, but it is unclear why the third one was not.
“I had to go the other way around because my daughter wanted to go and play in the park, and I won’t let her walk through that drain, which was blocked, and everything coming out has nowhere to go to – toilet tissues and poo floats around, and there is no solution,” said the resident who prefers not to be named.
“How can they just leave it, let the weeds grow and leave the problem unattended?” asked the frustrated resident.

Opposite the park, grass grows next to an electricity supply box outside a property’s wall, which could make it difficult for CoE’s electrical technicians to work on it.
“I took pictures of this and sent them into a WhatsApp group with the local ward councillor in it, but there was no response,” claimed the anonymous resident.
The Alberton Record sought comment from the CoE’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, and Ward 94 Clr Samantha Nair, who said:
“This issue was never brought to my attention. I will have to send the issue to the department concerned,” said Nair.
Comment from CoE:
The City is aware of the current state of Mayberry Park, but due to the festive break and the continuous rains
experienced recently, there was a delay in responding to the issue. We are. However, moving to the area on
Friday next week to start addressing the situation.
It is also important to encourage residents to report incidents and service delivery issues via the call centre (0860 543 000) so that they can be attended. The city/parks is aware of it, and we are working on it. We will send the team to attend to it before Friday, 17th January.
