Connor Walker wins award in US dance competition

Through dance, Connor Walker has qualified to compete in Europe and earned a scholarship.

Meet Connor Walker, an 18-year-old Alberton dancer whose talent has seen him dance on international stages. Last year, he competed in the International Performing Arts Championships (IPAC) in New York, USA, earning a platinum award.

He then competed in the Euro Dance competition, qualifying for the Mediterranean competition in Spain. Walker also did well enough in previous competitions to qualify for the World Lyrical Dance Federation Championships in Ireland.

Doing his Grade 12 last year at Hoërskool Alberton, Walker earned a 30% Health Professions Council of South Africa scholarship to study any course in health and fitness. It could not have come at a better time, with Grade 12 learners’ results released on January 14.

Walker’s mother, Jeanette du Plooy, was proud to see her son do well. “We are proud of what Connor has achieved, and know 2025 will be another good year for him,” said Du Plooy.

Among the top IPAC achievers were Connor’s peers – Sharron Kavanagh Potgieter, named one of the top five juniors, Ridan Oberoi, who earned a gold medal for hip-hop dance and best outfit, and Karabo Nkambule, who won a diamond medal for modern dancing and a platinum one for contemporary dance.
