Alberton Methodist Church women spread warmth and hope through baby care initiative
From tiny beanies and warm blankets to heartfelt handwritten messages, the Alberton Methodist Church is bringing hope and comfort to vulnerable mothers and newborn babies through a growing hospital outreach programme
A dedicated group of women from the Alberton Methodist Church is making a meaningful difference in the lives of new mothers and their babies through an outreach initiative that provides essential care items to local hospitals.
The church’s Women’s Auxiliary has been supporting families at Bertha Gxowa Hospital for many years, supplying baby clothing, toiletries and essential items to mothers who often arrive at the facility with very little.
More recently, their efforts have expanded to Thelle Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus, where the need is equally urgent.
Hospital staff report a significant demand for assistance. Thelle Mogoerane Hospital, which has the largest premature baby unit in the district, cares for approximately 160 babies at any given time.

Meanwhile, Bertha Gxowa Hospital receives around 50 care packages for mothers each month, highlighting the ongoing need for support.
These outreach initiatives fall under the church’s Justice and Service programme and are driven by a committed network of volunteers.
Among them are the Yarn Sisters, a group of women who meet every second Friday to knit and crochet baby items such as blankets, beanies and booties.
Other support comes from members of the Alberton Women’s Auxiliary, the church congregation and the wider community. Their handmade contributions form part of the care packages distributed to mothers.
Each package is carefully prepared and includes not only practical items but also a handwritten card offering encouragement to mothers during a vulnerable time.
Recipients are consistently grateful for the support, especially because these hospitals do not receive similar care packages from other organisations.

“This is truly a service of love,” said Rev Jeff van der Spuy, praising the collective efforts of the Women’s Auxiliary, the Yarn Sisters and community members.
Despite ongoing contributions, the need for supplies such as wool, baby clothing and toiletries remains constant.
Community members are encouraged to get involved and help ensure that no baby leaves the hospital without warm clothing and essential items.
Residents wishing to support the initiative can contact the church office on 011 907 2807 and ask for Pastor Ashleigh for more information.
