DA says it will not rest until pothole and road repairs are prioritised

The DA in Ward 38 is working with the department to address road defects and potholes despite coalition problems.

The DA in Brackenhurst and Brackendowns welcomes the efforts of the roads department to address road infrastructure and potholes in the ward.

Ward 38 Clr Thavha Maifala-Masebe said the upgrading of road infrastructure got off to a good start at the end of last year.

“With an additional R19.17m allocated to the R264m budget of the department in the upcoming adjustment budget, the DA will not sit rest on its laurels until roads are resurfaced, potholes filled, and major streetlights repaired in the ward,” he said.

The DA noted the delay in the reconstruction of Poppy Street because of protracted payment issues between the appointed contractor and the City.

Maifala-Masebe said this is a concern because residents are already inconvenienced by heavy traffic caused by traffic light outages.

“The hijacking of the council by some opposition and minority parties has again delayed payment of contractors because of the adjustment budget not being passed. In the interim, the DA will liaise with the roads department and the MMC responsible to find solutions to ensure that the Poppy Street project is completed in the given timeline,” he explained.

He said they will continuously communicate with the department to ensure that the contractor is timeously paid for work done and will lobby for additional funds and resources to be made available to accelerate the project.
Of potholes in the area, the councillor said the DA had received a report from the department outlining its challenges.

The party is happy that despite the challenges, the department will attend to potholes on major streets in the ward.

“The DA also welcomes the improvement in the efforts of the department to address potholes since the start of the year. This is in line with the commitments made by the department before the end of the last year. The DA will not rest until pothole and road repairs are prioritised in the ward and remain committed to ensuring that basic services are delivered to all residents,” he concluded.
