Long grass in Verwoerdpark invites criminal activity
The Alberton SAPS has committed to staying on top of an ongoing threat in Verwoerdpark.
Several Verwoerdpark households are crying foul over the overgrown grass that is said to invite criminal elements into some houses on Phillips Street located behind the N3.
Just recently, several houses in the area were broken into after culprits were reported to have gained access through a small piece of ground behind Phillips Street.
The culprits reportedly use the piece of ground as a getaway to terrorise residents.
Resident Henry Sentamu recently had his TV, microwave and generator stolen after the criminals forcefully gained entry through his window.
“We were advised that we should try and throw broken bottles so that if someone tries to jump over the fence, they might get injured. The long grass is a major concern, especially because there is no one to attend to it, and as such, there is direct access for culprits to break in,” he explained.
Although he was informed these criminal activities usually happen, he said it was their first experience in the few months they have lived in the area.
Ward 37 Clr Tim Denny managed to get Ekurhuleni’s head of department to cut most of the grass. However, he said the criminal element in the area is still very real.

“According to our Vispol commander and sector managers, they have realised something is happening there and have committed to keeping residents safe. A case has also been registered. The community also has a WhatsApp group which updates residents,” said the spokesperson of the Alberton SAPS, Captain Manare Ramotshela.
