Eviction of illegal occupiers at Funny Farm faces new developments

As the clock ticks on the 72-hour eviction deadline for Funny Farm residents, illegal occupiers are calling for alternative housing before they vacate. Meanwhile, local authorities scramble to address both safety concerns and the looming question of relocation—leaving the future of the land in a delicate balance.

The ongoing eviction proceedings against illegal occupiers at Funny Farm, located on Erf 1224 of Alberton, have seen new developments as the City of Ekurhuleni Department of Human Settlements comes under increasing pressure to address both the needs of the occupiers and the concerns of the local community.

A recent court order, which suggests that the land be vacated within 72 hours, has prompted a response from the illegal occupiers, who have signed a petition stating that they are willing to leave the area on the condition that the Department of Human Settlements provides them with alternative accommodation.

Local officials, including those from the Department of Education, are monitoring the situation closely, as they plan to utilise the land for educational purposes in the near future.

This latest development follows months of tension in the area, where residents have raised concerns about crime and safety linked to the informal settlement. Many of the current occupiers have expressed their willingness to relocate but cite a lack of viable alternatives as a significant obstacle.

Authorities and the Department of Education are anxiously awaiting further updates from the Human Settlements Department regarding their plan to resolve the issue.

While the MEC for Education and the Department of Education are pushing for swift action, the growing tension between the occupiers and authorities leaves questions unanswered about what will happen next.

As developments continue, the focus will remain on whether a mutually agreeable solution can be reached before the eviction deadline expires.

The Department of Human Settlement was also given a right to oppose the ruling within five days after receiving the notice on November 5.

More information will be made available as soon as it is received.
