Ekurhuleni cracks down on fireworks

Find out what you need to know about fireworks in Ekurhuleni this festive season.

The City of Ekurhuleni is taking a firm stance on selling and setting off fireworks for New Year celebrations.

While fireworks are allowed under certain regulations, the city is reminding residents and businesses to follow the rules:

– Fireworks sales: Businesses selling fireworks must obtain certification from the South African Police Services Explosive Unit and EMS.

– Setting off fireworks: Fireworks may not be set off in public spaces, including parks, pavements, streets, restaurants, and shopping malls.

– Safety precautions: It is unlawful to point a firework at another person, animal, building, or vehicle.

Fines and penalties: Businesses selling fireworks without certification will be fined R2 500, while individuals setting off fireworks illegally will receive a R1 000 spot fine.

“As we celebrate the New Year, we want to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa. “We urge residents to be mindful of the noise level, animal safety, and their own safety. We urge the public to only set off fireworks in designated areas,” she continued.

The city is working closely with the SAPS, EMPD, and DEMS to respond to any fireworks-related complaints, especially on New Year’s Eve.

Residents can report incidents to the call centre on 0860 54 3000.
