Poor condition at the Brackenhurst Square addressed

Residents and customers have complained about the unclean state of Brackenhurst Square and centre management heeded the call.

The Alberton Record has received complaints about the condition of the Brackenhurst Square shopping centre.

Complaints included overgrown grass on McBride Street, packaging and empty liquor bottles dumped at the premises and the concern that conditions may be a serious health hazard with restaurants dumping old oil in the skips.

The resident said it was worrying when businesses lost focus on what is important.

“If they wish to make our community and, ultimately, our country all that it could be, it would take each one of them to contribute in a small way. We, therefore, appeal to the shop owners of the Bracken Square Centre to step up and make a difference.” the email read.

In the City of Ekurhuleni, it is primarily a municipal responsibility to clean sidewalks.

The Record visited the shopping centre to confirm the conditions described and contacted its manager (who wished not to be named) for a comment. He said the pavement not being cut was the municipality’s role and not their job and gave the undertaking that litter and grass would be sorted out.

After contacting the centre again on April 29, the manager confirmed the grass had been cut and wanted to hold the municipality accountable for its condition because it was a municipal responsibility to clean the sidewalks.
