Neglected Alberton Cemetery finally cleaned after months of public outcry

The City of Ekurhuleni has cleaned up the Alberton Cemetery after months of complaints from loved ones who have their deceased buried at the cemetery.

After months of complaints from grieving families and community members, the long-neglected Alberton Cemetery has finally been cleared and cleaned by the local municipality.

The cemetery had become severely overgrown and unkempt, drawing widespread frustration from families who described the site’s condition as both disrespectful and heartbreaking.

Visitors to the cemetery have now expressed relief that the grounds have received long-overdue maintenance.

The City of Ekurhuleni attributed the extended period of neglect to ongoing heavy rainfall, which made it difficult to access and maintain the site.

“Continuous wet weather significantly impacted our ability to maintain the grounds,” said City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini. “Waterlogged soil limited equipment access, and safety concerns forced us to delay scheduled upkeep.”

While the recent clean-up at Alberton Cemetery has been welcomed, concerns remain about the neglected state of Kromvlei Cemetery, which continues to face similar issues.
