WATCH: Here is how Albertonians celebrated and honoured Mandela Day

Local businesses, schools, faith and welfare groups, and other public organisations celebrated by doing their bit to observe Mandela’s 67 years of serving humanity.

The United Nations General Assembly’s 42nd plenary session met on November 10, 2009, in New York to consider calls from the 46664 concerts and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to officially recognise International Mandela Day.

In adopting the resolution, the Assembly stated:

“The long history of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s leading role in and support for Africa’s struggle for liberation and Africa’s unity, and his outstanding contribution to the creation of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic South Africa, the Assembly decides to designate July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day, to be observed each year beginning in 2010.”

Since then, billions around the world honour Mandela Day by committing to 67 minutes of public good in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of fighting for social justice.

“We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring people together around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity,” reads a statement issued on Mandela’s behalf.

Mandela Day is not an international public holiday but a day to honour the legacy and values of South Africa’s former president through volunteering and community service.

On July 18, residents of Alberton, including local businesses, schools, faith and welfare groups, and other public organisations, celebrated by doing their part to observe Mandela’s 67 years of service to humanity.

The Alberton Record was there to capture these heartwarming moments.

A small act of kindness went a long way in Raceview as Blue Wings Association stepped in to help those in need on Mandela Day. Blue Wings Association marked Mandela Day by feeding 33 vulnerable people with bread and soup outside their premises in Raceview. “We wanted to do more, but unfortunately, we work with what we have. We depend entirely on donations,” said Lucky Modiko of Blue Wings.

Ladismith Cheese partnered with PPT Social Run and the Hope SA Foundation on a drive to feed thousands on Mandela Day. They visited Moffat View where they served warm meals, fresh bread and handed out toys, clothing and kindness. Little ones hosted their sandwiches they received on the day to say thank you.

Miss Face of Gauteng, Keesha Williams, in collaboration with 10-year-old Ntsako Dlamini, a Miss and Mr Alberton finalist, marked Mandela Day by giving back to the Eden Park community. On July 18 the pair served plates of samp along with loaves of bread to local residents in need. The initiative, held in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, fed 100 community members, with each person receiving a plate of warm samp and a loaf of bread.
As part of Mandela Day celebrations, Alberton Lions Club extended a helping hand to new mothers. They delivered 25 Mommy Care Bags to new mother at South Rand Hospital. Each bag included knitted items, blankets, a teddy bear, toiletires and other essentail baby goods. They also handed out cakes to the security staff at the hospital and delivered meal packs to five creches with help from Investec.
When young and old join forces for a good cause, the results can be truly heartwarming. That was the case on Mandela Day, when several organisations and residents came together to feed around 100 job seekers in Alberton. The organisations involved were Brackendowns CPF, Suiderlig Voortrekkers, Sentinel Security, the Montgomery Group, Rand Co, residents, the Alberton Record and SAPS.
