Alberton Lions Club donates recycled school shoes to Soweto learners

Thirty pairs of school shoes and sixty pairs of socks were donated to learners in need.

Members of the Alberton Lions Club, including Sandy King, Nisha Singh, Melinda Strydom and club president Mukesh Dayah, visited Mxolisi Primary School in Soweto on July 24 to donate school shoes and socks to learners in need.

A total of 30 pairs of school shoes and 60 pairs of socks were handed over to grateful children.

The socks were sponsored by HMS School Wear, and the school shoes were donated by Maria Viljoen-Manana.

What makes these shoes unique is that they are made from recycled IV drip bags. They are environmentally friendly, waterproof, polish-free and built to last. At just R35 per pair, they offer an affordable solution to a widespread problem.

As part of their ongoing campaign, the Alberton Lions Club is appealing for financial donations to continue providing shoes and socks to children who attend school barefoot.

Club secretary Melinda Strydom said the moment was deeply moving. “The joy on the scholars’ faces, knowing they can now go to school with warm feet, was priceless.”

The Alberton Lions Club is also a registered beneficiary of the Woolworths My School Card programme.

Community members are encouraged to list the club as a beneficiary to support its outreach efforts, which include hunger relief, youth development, environmental protection, vision support, diabetes and mental health awareness, and paediatric cancer initiatives.
