Spark Alberton learners’ show of force at international mathematics competition

Matific Maths Olympiad sees millions primary school learners from more than 20 countries participate. Spark Alberton was one of them.

SPARK Alberton, located at 45 Newquay Road in New Redruth, showcased its learners’ strength on the international stage at the Matific Maths Olympiad, where primary school learners from more than 20 countries competed.

The Alberton-based school placed 16th out of 331 participating schools in the Southern African region.

The five-day online competition – recognised as the largest of its kind in the world – aims to foster a love of maths, improve outcomes for learners, and provide educators with valuable insight into learning gaps.

More than 57 000 students worldwide took part, completing over 1.3 million activities and answering nearly 6.9 million questions during the Olympiad.

SPARK Schools follow the CAPS+ curriculum, which combines South Africa’s Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) with international benchmarks.

In mathematics, learners are taught according to Scholastic’s Prime curriculum, modelled on rigorous standards from Singapore, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

SPARK also incorporates both direct classroom instruction and technology-based learning, where each child’s data is fed back to educators.

This allows teachers to tailor their approach to every learner’s needs, helping scholars achieve globally competitive results.

Reacting to SPARK Alberton’s performance, principal Toni Douman said: “We are overjoyed to celebrate our scholars’ outstanding achievement in the Matific Maths Olympiad. This success is not only a reflection of their talent and commitment, but also a powerful expression of our sixth core value of empowerment.

When scholars are empowered with the confidence to take on challenges, the skills to persevere, and the belief that their effort matters, they are capable of extraordinary things.”
