WATCH: Champions Day Care Centre celebrates Mandela Day with children and elderly
Children and elderly residents gathered at Champions Day Care Centre in Greenfields for a fun-filled Mandela Day celebration that promoted reading and giving back.
Champions Day Care Centre in Greenfields celebrated Mandela Day by hosting an event that brought together children and elderly residents from the community.
The celebration honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy through 67 minutes of service, reading and community engagement.
The day was filled with activities aimed at encouraging learning, unity and kindness while creating lasting memories for both the young and old.
Palmridge Library partnered with the centre as part of its Mandela Day programme. Librarians spent 67 minutes reading stories about the life of Madiba, helping children learn about his values of forgiveness, respect, leadership and service to others.

Mlungisi Nkosi from Palmridge Library said, “We are celebrating Mandela Day through reading because books open doors to knowledge. By spending 67 minutes reading stories about Tata Madiba, we hope to inspire children to become lifelong readers and responsible citizens who will continue his legacy of making a difference in their communities,” said Mlungisi.
Champions Day Care Centre founder and principal Nontombeko Sihome said, “Today is about celebrating Tata Mandela by showing love, kindness and respect. Seeing our children and elderly residents spending time together reminds us that we all have a role to play in building stronger communities. We are grateful to everyone who partnered with us to make this day a success,” she said.
The event also received support from Pick n Pay SkyCity, which donated two cakes for everyone attending the celebration.
“Pick n Pay is proud to support community initiatives such as this one. Mandela Day encourages us to give back, and we are delighted to contribute to a celebration that brings smiles to children and elderly members of the community,” said Emma Malunga from Pick n Pay SkyCity.
The celebration concluded with refreshments, entertainment and shared moments between the children and senior citizens.
