Residents urged to take precautions as severe thunderstorms expected across Ekurhuleni
Ekurhuleni residents and motorists are urged to stay alert as Yellow Level 2 severe thunderstorms bring a risk of lightning, hail, strong winds and localised flooding.
Residents and motorists across the City of Ekurhuleni have been urged to take extra precautions as severe thunderstorms are expected across parts of Gauteng on Tuesday, September 29.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said its aquatic teams, vehicle rescue teams and firefighters remain on high alert following a Yellow Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
Showers and thundershowers are expected, with some potentially becoming severe.
The storms may bring small hail, excessive lightning, strong gusty winds and heavy downpours.
These conditions could result in localised flooding, particularly on susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
Motorists urged to exercise caution
DEMS has urged motorists to remain alert while travelling during the stormy conditions.
Motorists are advised to:
- Maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles.
- Reduce their speed and drive according to the conditions.
- Avoid crossing bridges that have been submerged by floodwater and use alternative routes.
- Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, including checking tyre tread, lights, windscreen wipers and brakes.
- Pedestrians have also been urged to exercise caution when crossing roads and near flooded streams.
Residents should use designated bridges and avoid attempting to cross flooded waterways, as this could put them at risk of drowning.
Children and outdoor activities
Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children indoors during the storms.
Residents are also urged to avoid sporting activities and other outdoor activities in open fields during thunderstorms, particularly when lightning is present.
DEMS warned that lightning can strike exposed and elevated objects, making open areas particularly dangerous during thunderstorms.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert to changing weather conditions and take precautions where necessary.
