Crippling effects of sudden power cuts

The Alberton Record has received a letter from a concerned resident regarding power cuts. The Record has forwarded the letter to councillors and awaiting response.

I am writing to express the growing frustration felt by many residents of Alberton and surrounding areas due to the increasing frequency of unexpected power cuts.

Unlike scheduled load shedding, these unannounced blackouts strike without warning, particularly during rainy weather, leaving families and businesses to cope with the disruption.

These sudden power failures point to poor maintenance of our infrastructure. The ageing equipment cannot withstand wet conditions, leading to exposed wires, transformer failures, and short circuits.

Some areas are consistently affected, while others remain unaffected, highlighting an unfair imbalance in service delivery.

The consequences are severe. Household appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines are frequently damaged by dangerous power surges when the electricity returns.

Many families are left with costly repair bills for items they cannot afford to replace. Additionally, power cuts cause perishable food to spoil, creating unnecessary financial strain, particularly for those without backup generators.

Rather than taking responsibility and providing clear solutions, local authorities continue to offer vague excuses.

This includes that the weather caused the outage, or that they are aware of the issue or that they are working on upgrades. Yet nothing changes.

It is high time that local officials take real action to address these issues.

We need transparent maintenance schedules, urgent infrastructure upgrades, compensation for damaged appliances, and dedicated response teams during storms.

Until then, the suffering of residents will continue as power cuts disrupt our daily lives.
