From Olympic Dreams to World Mastery: Bernadette Coston’s Hockey Legacy
Bernadette Coston’s determination in her hockey career didn’t only open doors for her but also put the Alberton name on the map.
Bernadette Coston (35), a trailblazing South African hockey star from Verwoerdpark, has left an indelible mark on the sport.
With a remarkable 11-year international career, Coston’s dedication, passion, and perseverance have earned her a coveted place in the annals of hockey history.
Coston’s hockey journey began at a tender age, with mini hockey in Laerskool President Steyn.
“My mom is a hockey coach at Marias Viljoen and still does provincial hockey coaching. So hockey is something I grew up with,” said Coston.
Her talent and commitment soon propelled her to provincial levels, representing Southern Gauteng throughout her high school in Hoërskool Alberton.
Eastern Gauteng also beckoned, and she answered, solidifying her position as a force to be reckoned with.
After high school, she studied at the University of Johannesburg, earning her a spot in the premier league hockey team.
Her progression to the senior Southern Gauteng provincial team was inevitable. In 2011, at just 22, she debuted for the South African women’s national team against Kenya in Zimbabwe.

Coston’s impressive career includes representing South Africa at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, two FIH Hockey World Cups, and two Commonwealth Games.
She was also part of the team that won gold medals at the African Cup of Nations in Nairobi in 2013 and Ghana in 2022.
Last year in March, Coston retired from international hockey with 169 caps. “I had to make a sacrifice and focus on pursuing my career a bit more,” she said.
However, her love for the sport remained unwavering. Coston joined the 35+ women’s national team for the World Cup Masters Hockey Tournament held in Cape Town.
This esteemed tournament held from October 11 to 26 showcased the exceptional expertise and enthusiasm of seasoned hockey players from all across the world
The team conquered the competition, claiming the world championship title.
Throughout her illustrious career, Coston has accumulated numerous accolades, including Protea colours from 2011 to 2022. She was also a former head girl of Hoërskool Alberton in 2007.
Coston holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences Chiropractic from the University of Johannesburg and now runs her own BC Chiropractic clinic.
