Alberton Retirement Village opens karate club for senior citizens

Two retirees have already received floating trophies for their excellent performance in Kata and self-defence techniques.

In a first for an Alberton Retirement Village, a karate club was opened for the senior citizens living at the old age home.

The village’s committee gave the green light for the club to be opened.

The karate club was surprisingly well-received by retirees in the village. The chief instructor, sensei Llewellyn Oosthuizen, was surprised when all his instructors decided to join and assist him with the training of the elderly.

Instructors are grateful that the committee of the Retirement Village allowed them, with the assistance of young people, to train the elderly with karate training lessons.

Wilna Jenkinson and Petro Coulthard, two retirees at the village, have already received floating trophies for their excellent performance in kata and self-defence techniques.

Senior citizens in the village enjoy physical activity because it forces them to do exercises that help keep them fit, learn self-defence techniques, and maintain a strong and healthy mind.

The training at the club is slightly different from other karate clubs because the aim is on fitness and self-defence techniques and only residents of the village are allowed to join.
