Ways to avoid becoming a victim of smash-and-grabbers in Sandton

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, this week, issued precautions which motorists can use to minimise becoming victims of smash-and-grab crimes while travelling through South Africa.

“Unfortunately, the threat of smash-and-grab incidents has become a concerning reality in our community,” Fihla said, advising: “Don’t leave valuables in plain sight, even if you’re only leaving your car for a short time.”
This follows a warning having been issued by the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) on October 3, encouraging motorists to exercise caution at the Grayston Drive off-ramp to the highway. CoJ encourages motorists to carry pepper spray or tasers, and to have anti-smash-and-grab window film installed.

Tips from Superintendent Fihla to consider when driving:
- Lock your doors and roll up your windows. Even when you stop for a short time, keep your vehicle securely locked.
- Minimise distractions while driving, such as using your phone or eating.
- Choose well-lit parking spots, especially at night.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to people and vehicles around you, especially at intersections and traffic lights.
- During the holiday season, be extra careful in parking lots and shopping centres. These areas may be crowded, and thieves may take advantage of the distraction.
- Report suspicious activity. If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to report it to the authorities.
