Is this weekend game a walk in the park for United Stars?
United Stars president Sakhile Zulu is pinning his hopes on victory against Stamina with Gods looking down upon them tomorrow.
United Stars FC has gone nine matches unbeaten in the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League but the million-dollar question is whether they can keep up the pace they have set.
The River Park outfit has played nine games, winning seven and drawing two to amass 23 points. They are just three ahead of their nearest rival LRC FC, which has played the same number of games but won six, drawn two and lost one in the 16-team league.
Stars’ next game is against struggling Stamina Football Academy which has played nine games, winning one and losing all eight of them, as the teams enter the second round of the league. They play the third from the bottom side on February 10 at the Totalsports Alex Safehub at 15:00.
Football fundis in the township believe that if Stars have prepared well, this game should be a walk in the park for a side whose promotion has eluded them for many years.
But other fundis have cautioned that anything is possible in football. “There can be no dangerous opponent like a wounded one,” they warned Stars which has only managed to score seven goals and had 28 scored against them.
LRC FC, Stars’ rival for promotion to the Hollywood bets Johannesburg Men’s Regional League, meet Amaskills FC at 11:00 at the same venue on Sunday, which may draw them level on points if Stars are beaten and LRC wins its encounter against the ‘skillful’ team.
The top two teams have no chance of being dethroned even if they both lose their weekend games, as the third side on the log, Laz FC from Lyndhurst has so far collected 19 points and a win will give them 22 points.
Stars president Sakhile Zulu has described Stamina as his side’s hoodoo team, saying over the years it has never been easy to beat them even though they are currently underperforming.
“Our preparations were more focused on defending well and not conceding but also on being clinical in front of goals because this is where we tend to lose it as we create many chances but fail to make good use of them.
“We continue to take one game at a time and hope the Gods shall be looking down on us tomorrow and we win our game,” Zulu said.
