New chief of police appointed

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) recently appointed Mr Zwelibanzi Velaphi Nyanda as the city’s chief of police.

The appointment was part of the city’s Institutional Review Process (IRP) announced by the mayor, Clr Parks Tau, during his State of the City address last year.

Mr Nyanda held several senior positions in the SAPS and National Security Intelligence from 2003 and 2011. He was the acting head of the SAPS’ Covert Intelligence Collection prior to being appointed as the chief of police.

Mr Nyanda spent ten years in the African National Congress’s Security and Enforcement Unit as an MK commander, the chief of urban operations, regional and provincial commissar. He was also a company commander in the South African Defence Force and SO1 and SO2, responsible for infantry projects and policy and planning respectively.

“We believe that Mr Nyanda brings loads of management experience and skills to this job which can only improve public safety in the city and help achieve the related vision of the Growth Development Strategy 2040 Strategy,” said Mr Trevor Fowler, the City Manager for Johannesburg.
