Residents urged to increase security

Members of the Jeppe Community Police Forum (JCPF), urge residents to improve their security to prevent being targeted by criminals and to be vigilant.

It has come to their attention, and that of the Jeppe SAPS, that people walk the streets with earphones connected to their cell phones. As a result, they cannot hear anyone approach them.

People are advised to refrain from doing this as it is a distraction and acts as an attraction to the criminals.

Members of the community have also been warned not to walk with excessive amounts of cash and valuables.

An increase in car hijackings has also been noticed in the Jeppe SAPS Precinct. People who are targeted are usually seated in a parked vehicle in the street.

Choose a safe parking spot. Ensure the vehicle is parked behind a locked gate or garage.

Business robberies

Business owners are advised not to keep their businesses open until too late, as the Jeppe SAPS has noticed an increase in business-related crimes.

If business owners want to keep their businesses open until late, close the doors and serve customers through a gate and serving hatch.

The JCPF urges all members of the community to keep sector vehicle and manager numbers handy.

If people cannot get through to any of the cellular phone numbers for the sector vans, call 10111 from a landline or 112 from a mobile phone. Calling 10111 from a mobile phone is chargeable. The 10111 call centre operator will relay the message to the police radio in the relevant sector van.

The 112 call centre agent will dispatch the call through to the relevant authorities.

Members of the community must also request a reference number for the call logged.

Residents are also urged to attend the various sector crime forums held in their sectors on a monthly basis. These forums are valuable and residents get to meet the sector manager, sector chairperson and the stakeholders who attend to problems relating to crime.

The sector managers can be contacted for dates and venues where monthly sector crime forum meetings are held.

Domestic Violence

An increase in domestic violence cases in the Jeppe SAPS precinct is of concern.

The victim support group, and other relevant stakeholders, are working tirelessly to address these concerns.

The JCPF and police are disturbed by the number of domestic violence cases that are withdrawn by victims. A number of initiatives are planned by the Jeppe CPF, youth desk and community street patrollers to create awareness.

JMPD, SAPS partnership

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and Jeppe SAPS partnership is yielding positive results.

A number of people were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor in July.

The JCPF encouraged more operations of this nature from the authorities.

The JMPD bylaw team for ward 66 urges all residents not to place metal skips, designed for building rubble, on the pavement.

These skips damage pavements. Residents are urged to find an appropriate spot to place these skips.
