Youth Desk committed to fighting crime

The Yeoville Community Police Forum Youth Desk is committed to fighting crime.

This is evident in their daily work within the Yeoville community.

The Youth Desk has embarked on school campaigns, informing the children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but also educating them about social issues such as domestic violence.

The Youth Desk consists of 50 members from in and around Yeoville. The Youth Desk recently held an event at Yeoville Boys on Mandela Day, where more education took place.

Plans are afoot for a Women’s Day event, which will be held at the Yeoville Library on a date yet to be named.

“We go on walk abouts in the area, educating women, children and men on all social issues and the different ways in which they can find help and solutions,” said Ms Lilly Bailey, project co-ordinator of the Yeoville Youth Desk.

The Youth Desk works with the Yeoville SAPS on some operations, such as surprise visits to schools, where students are searched.

“We also come across all sorts of students with behavioural problems,” said Ms Bailey.

Ms Sophie Mothlabi, who is also part of the Youth Desk, shared some personal experiences in dealing with children with behavioural problems.

“I have a son with a drug problem and I know how difficult it is to live with a person with a problem,” said Ms Motlhabi. Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS, works with the Youth Desk daily and is happy with the work they do.

“I work with them on many operations at schools, they participate in every event we have and they update me on their daily activities and where they need assistance,” said Constable Malatji.
