Library lavatory disgrace
The municipality has offered no explanation over the shocking state of the lavatory facilities at the Edenvale Library.
In just one week, two angry residents contacted the NEWS to complain about the state of the toilets at the library.
From toilets filled with faeces to broken plumbing, the only explanation given to residents is there is no cleaning contract in place for the public facility.
Neither of the residents who contacted the NEWS wished to be identified, but supplied their information for record purposes.
The first complainant, a regular patron of the library, said she travels from Kempton Park just to make use of the facility.
“It has always been a tremendous pleasure to visit the Edenvale Library. It has been neat, tidy and spotless,” she said.
“However, lately it has become such a pain. As it is, someone in the family usually ends up needing to visit the loo or have a drink of water. There is no toilet paper, the toilets are blocked and the stench is unbearable,” she said.
Another resident said library staff members told her council did not renew the cleaning contract for the library.
“How are we supposed to use such facilities? Where do our rates go? I feel embarrassed as a resident,” she said.
The NEWS questioned the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Mr Samuel Modiba, about the state of the library and the cleaning contract for the facility.
An inquiry was sent to Mr Modiba on Tuesday last week and comment was requested by Friday. At the time of going to print, no comment was received.
