Open manhole a danger to motorists and pedestrians
An open manhole on the corner of Cavendish and Frances streets in Yeoville is posing a danger to motorists and pedestrians.
The manhole is situated at the entrance of the Catholic Church on Cavendish Street.
This affects the traffic when the church hosts events or services.
“The church has to put a flag in the open manhole to warn motorists and pedestrians of the pending danger,” said Mr Joseph Dube, the vice chairperson of the Parish Council at the church.
The EXPRESS spoke to residents of the area, who said they were worried about the open manhole.
“The manhole has been open for over a year now. A person will have to fall in before something is done about it,” said Mr Dan Thusi, who lives on Frances Street.
Mr Dube said he recently sent an e-mail to the Johannesburg Roads Agency. The agency acknowledged the problem and promised to deal with the matter accordingly. “Mr Ian Boyd, who is the deputy director of compliance and support at the agency, gave me a reference number. Nothing has been done about this danger,” said Mr Dube.
The EXPRESS sent an enquiry to Mr Boyd. At the time of going to print no comment had been received.
