Public meeting to discuss lack of safety in open spaces

A public meeting will be held on October 10 to discuss safety concerns in all open spaces in ward 66.

Clr Carlos da Rocha said he met with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) and on-site meetings were held at several open spaces to determine the extent of problems experienced by residents.

“The meeting will be held to discuss our options. We will discuss what can and cannot be done. JCPZ wants to work with the community. Proposals on security measures will be accepted from the community within reason,” said Clr Da Rocha.

All residents affected by problems in the Langermann Koppies, close to the Scottish Horse War Memorial, Panorama Park, Yeoville koppies, Benbow Park, Rhodes Park and any other open space of concern, are requested to attend the meeting.

“Due to the manpower used in recent weeks and meetings conducted with officials I have decided to have one meeting. It is more practical. I want it to be fair to all residents. JCPZ officials will attend the meeting to answer questions,” said Clr Da Rocha.

Over the past few weeks the EXPRESS published several articles relating to the lack of safety at local open spaces.

Residents demanded action from authorities and called on JCPZ to implement security measures. Problems include criminals using the open spaces as a hide out and vagrants living and targeting residents in the area.

The meeting will take place at the Kensington Community Centre in Rhodes Park at 6.30pm.

Entrance through Orlando Street. Clr Da Rocha said security will be provided to residents attending the meeting.
