Book worm Dearshney honoured
This was done during the Rhodes Park Youth Poetry Club class at Rhodes Park on Saturday last week.
11-year-old Dearshney Mukwevho was honoured for reading 217 books.
Jozi Book Fair director, Dr Maria van Driel, gave Dearshney a book hamper on behalf of the Jozi Book Fair and Oxford University Press.
This was done during the Rhodes Park Youth Poetry Club class at Rhodes Park on Saturday last week.
Dr Van Driel said this was part of her organisation encouraging children to read.
“This will help inspire her and her pears to read more. They will also see that as she did it, they could also do it. Pears learn from pears. We have to encourage children to read; they are our future,” said Dr Van Driel.
Mrs Faradiba Morton, from the Rhodes Park Youth Club, said the children performed their poems to guests.
The poems were written by the children themselves.
Mrs Morton said that reading and writing poems can help cultivate the minds of children.
“It helps them understand the world better. If you read more, it also helps you with your school work. Reading improves your grammar, vocab and language at large. Performing their work in front of the audience helps them with confidence and to not be shy when doing public speaking,” said Mrs Morton.
