Youngsters engage in discourse through poetry
Amid the many social ills that may impact negatively on the lives of youngsters, including drugs and crime, the Rhodes Park Youth Poetry Project uses poetry as a potent weapon to defend youngsters.
Through this platform, youngster from across Johannesburg gathered on recently to recite poems and to raise issues through the spoken word.
It was the group’s last session for the year recently.
Founded by Mrs Farah Morton, from Proud Community Youth Development (PCYD), the Rhodes Park Youth Poetry Project is aimed at empowering the youth to contribute to discourse through the spoken word.
The PCYD creates an enabling environment for children to learn valuable life skills through reading, writing and interacting with peers.
The next class will be on November 22.In support of the project, the EXPRESS publishes the children’s poems once a month under Poetry Empowers.
For more information on the project, contact Mrs Morton on 074 330-1587.
What a cruel pain to swallow
Sindiso Ncunu
What a cruel pain to swallow, I suffer alone, in silence
What a cruel pain to swallow, I found the strength to fight
What a cruel pain to swallow, to believe that there was a way out
What a cruel pain for someone to swallow, I hard everyone’s criticism
I became known as the boring person, what a cruel pain to swallow
Was there recognition of all the work that I have done?
I fought alone, Alone I fought; I fought alone, in silence I fought…
Life and Gifts
Prince Phiri (11)
God gave you life and gifts; He created this world for everyone to in it
We rose from dust with souls filled with hope and peace
We were made because God loves us so much
With God in this equation lie become a breeze
God gave us this life to fill with ease
God gave us life and gifts, to respect life
To fulfil the oath of our gifts
Understand that we must have faith in God
Hope will help us understand that He is our father
Dolphins
Sinikiwe, Phiri (9)
I wonder if they swim all day and if they always get away
I saw a little fellow and I wondered if he was yellow
I thought that before and tried to think more
Dolphins do not eat grass but my way they can always pass
My friend
Dearshney Mukwevho (11)
My friend is a very special person
She is always there for me when I need her most
She also has a very lovely name, Sinikiwe
Sinikiwe is a very unique name
Most girls favourite colours are pink or purple
But Sinikiwe’s favourite colour is yellow
The colour of the sun
She’s not always serious and likes to have fun
She was born in Gauteng, the City of Gold
She is also a very good person, also very bold
She likes to play netball, a girl’s favourite sport.
She doesn’t care if she has a big wart
She is born in September, the season of spring
Then she can show off her lovely bling-bling
In her spare time she likes to read and read
And sometimes likes to do good deeds
She is a very good friend as you can see
Kind and beautiful as a friend can be
Poem about myself
Sinikiwe Phiri (9)
I am a girl, a child, with black hair and brown eyes
I also like school allot
My favourite subjects at school is mathematics
So I go to school, because one day I would like to be a teacher
I am a human and have hopes to live
I am small yet I have the right to say no to things that do not fit my way
I have rights and they must not be taken away
I am a proud student who will master my abilities in life
Not forgetting that I am a child, I have to be taken care off
My life is a song, a song that I sing
A life full of opportunities, so I take it
My future will be filled with forgiveness and I will forget the rest
It will be shown in the way I think and act
My precious future that is not meant to waste
Success is a state of mind that will include education
I am a child that is free to learn in the lake of hope
I know that our country needs people like us
To execute and stand by our rights
No threads to follow me, only guidance will let me be
So for now I am glad to be alive!
