Massive pothole reopens on Linksfield Road

“The municipality must not think they are going to raise defences of not knowing, it is time to cite officials in legal action for gross dereliction of duty and endangering the public,” he added.

Repairs to a massive pothole at the intersection of First Avenue and Second Street in Edenvale have failed.

“The repairs took weeks to complete and the holes are now all open again,” said the ward 19 councillor in Edenvale, Clr Bill Rundle.

With the potholes now open, motorists travelling along Linksfield Road are forced into a single lane.

“Last week, barriers were placed around the potholes after vehicles were damaged,” said Clr Rundle.

“The municipality must not think they are going to raise defences of not knowing, it is time to cite officials in legal action for gross dereliction of duty and endangering the public,” he added.

Clr Rundle added that he hopes there would not be any serious injuries or fatalities as a result of accidents on the road.

The spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Mr Themba Gadebe, said the pothole is a result of poor workmanship after Eskom laid new cables along Second Street, Edenvale.

“The EMM has not accepted the reinstatement of the work along Second Street and has communicated this to Eskom on several occasions,” said Mr Gadebe.

He added that the most recent report was submitted to Eskom approximately a month ago, when the pothole was pointed out to them on-site.

“The EMM’s way-leave section also reported these specific potholes to Eskom and still nothing was done. A follow up will be made,” said Mr Gadebe.
